PENETRANT TESTING (PT)

Description

Dye penetrant test (PT) is widely used to detect surface discontinuities like cracks, fractures, porosity, grinding defects, incomplete fusion, leaks, impact fractures, pinholes, laps, and flaws in joints. This test or inspection method serves as an aid in finding irregularities in aluminum, cast iron, brass, steel and stainless steel, copper, magnesium, carbides, ceramics, and even certain rubber and plastic materials.

Hence, PT is suitable for both ferrous and non-ferrous materials and is highly economical as compared to the other non-destructive inspection methods.

Advantages
  1. Suitable for a range of materials. The test can be applied to various materials, including metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites.
  2. Inspection is quick and can easily cover large areas and volumes.
  3. Inspection of complex shapes can be performed easily.
  4. Indications on the surface constitute a visual representation of the flaw and so an idea about the actual defect is obtained.
  5. Portable and easily available.
  6. Materials and associated equipment for the dye penetrant test are relatively inexpensive.
  7. It is generally less expensive than other NDT methods like radiography or ultrasonic testing.

Limitation
  1. Limited to the only surface-breaking defects.
  2. Materials with a non-porous surface are suitable
  3. Direct access to the test surface is a prerequisite for the test.
  4. Sensitivity can be affected by the surface finish and roughness of the body.
